WORDSWORTH PRIMARY SCHOOL

Curriculum

At Wordsworth Primary School and Nursery we follow the aims of the National Curriculum. It clearly sets out the framework through which pupils are introduced to the essential knowledge and skills that they need to be educated global citizens. We aim to nurture curiosity and provide opportunities by developing a united community committed to learning and growing through hard work, resilience and perseverance.

Learning is our core purpose, and we are committed to developing children’s metacognitive skills in order for them to become independent, confident and reflective learners. We are invested in a curriculum that will teach our children to safeguard themselves, navigate relationships and see the value in lifelong learning. It is our aim to inspire our children, showing them that learning is rewarding and enjoyable; therefore, we invest in a curriculum that is, creative and engaging, recognising and celebrating our diverse school community.

The result of a good, well-taught curriculum is that pupils know more and are able to do more and remember more. These are the premises on which we build our curriculum. Knowledge is key to everything. We aim for children to build on prior knowledge and make learning connections to help them retain their learning. Within this, we think carefully about how to sequence key knowledge and skills across key stages, year groups, within subject progression and in every lesson. If nothing in the long-term memory has been altered, nothing has been learnt, so we have taken deliberate steps in our pedagogical approach to implement research-based initiatives linked to memory.

In addition, we supplement the curriculum with additional learning specific to the needs of our school and our cohorts. We are committed to providing a curriculum that is accessible to all learners, regardless of their starting point. This means ensuring that language development is embedded across all subject areas. Through differentiated instruction, scaffolding, and language-rich environments, we enable all pupils to access the curriculum and participate fully in school life.
