WORDSWORTH PRIMARY SCHOOL

The Stephen Spender Prize

In July, we took part in a competition across the UK and Ireland - The Stephen Spender Prize in two categories: Schools Laureate Prize and The Portuguese Spotlight. Children chose poems from any language and translated them into English. It was rewarding to see them put in the extra effort, try something new, and also do it so well.

We received the results and are delighted to announce that we have three children who impressed the jury with their translations:

Nellie Kokocinska - commended in KS1-2 category - Schools Laureate Prize (who translated a poem from a language she doesn't speak - La Steaua)

Antonio Nogueira - highly commended in the Portuguese Spotlight with a translation from Portuguese (Mar Portugues)

Amelia Ambrozy - winner in KS1-2 category - Schools Laureate Prize with a translation from Polish (Liczanki)

This competition is a fantastic opportunity which is more than poetry and languages - it celebrates creativity, multiculturalism, community and diversity - a lot of what defines our Wordsworth children. Well done to everyone who entered their poems.

Our school honoured the three children in an assembly, where they received Amazon vouchers, books and pens. Their parents were invited to join in the celebration of their success.

Our thanks go to Mrs Gheorghita who coordinated the school's entries to this competition and gives such wonderful support to the children at our school who speak different languages.

Here is Amelia's winning translation:
